After a few crossed signals, I was finally able to spend some quality time with a good friend and a great cigar, the first of the new year.  With temperatures stabilizing well below zero, we opted for one of our local Brick and Mortars, and I selected a Crowned Heads Las Calaveras Edicion Limitada from one of the locked cabinets in the hallway.  This was my first Crowned Heads, and I was looking forward to settling in and enjoying some quality time with a cigar.
I went with a straight cut, and the cold draw was subtly sweet with notes of unsalted nuts and leather.

Crowned Heads Las Calaveras 2015 – First Third

The first third carried a touch of nutmeg spice, but I predominantly tasted mild coffee and cream.  I was expecting a stronger bite but this stick was pleasently mild through the whole first third.

Crowned Heads Las Calaveras 2015 – Second Third

During  the second third, a slight fold in the binder caused the wrapper to tear right at the shoulder, and I would spend the rest of the cigar negotiating a tricky draw — holding the stick just right would yield a decent draw but I would struggle with uneven burn lines and two occasional relights.  It wasn’t all for naught, though, as more pronounced cedar and earth notes begin to take over.

Crowned Heads Las Calaveras 2015 – Last Third

The final third combined those woodsy leather notes with a touch of black coffee, and although the wrapper really started to deteriorate I kept this going as long as I could.  Overall this was a very enjoyable cigar – I would definitely smoke another – it was a fine choice to kick off the new year.  Total burn time was around one hour and 45 minutes.
